After 20 years - we replaced and we are so glad we did!
May 4, 2025 — JeffinAustinTX · Review provided by homedepot.com — 5/520 years ago, I installed a Rinnai R53 and for 20 years it has been running flawlessly. Our R53 was still doing great, but after 20 years of daily service it was time to re-tire the old heater rather than waiting for a failure to occur. Quite frankly, I figure that when this type of heater ever does fail, it will flat out stop working; so I'll replace too soon on order to avoid this situation. The replacement was relatively painless, with a few exceptions. 1 - the mounting brackets do not line up with the old unit. They COULD have made this adjustment but they did not so I had to install new wall mounts. Also the inlet/outlet ports are slightly different which made the final connections a bit tricky, but still doable. All the rest was pretty much drop in. I got my vent pipes installed and the new heater fired up and was producing hot water from the first moment; with one issue. The max temp on this new unit is 120F. My old R53 had a top temp of 130F - my wife & I were both REALLY disappointed. Yes - 120F is hot enough, but not what we really want for doing dishes. However - after doing a bit of searching on Youtube, I found a short clip that showed how to set a DIP switch inside the housing that fixes this problem. Within 3 minutes I made the change (did not even need to unplug it!) and now the top temp is 140F; higher than the R53. We have ours set at 130F and things are back to normal. We love our Rinnai; 20 years and counting. This new unit is a great replacement and I hop it lasts just as long. !!! - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - !!!
