[Incentivized Review] Having installed 8 small electric tankless heaters from 3 manufacturers, I feel like I have a goo...
October 22, 2019 — HomeDepotCustomer · Review provided by homedepot.com — 4/5Having installed 8 small electric tankless heaters from 3 manufacturers, I feel like I have a good bead on the market. A few years back, most manufacturers were far too optimistic in specifying water flow rate and temp from smaller heaters under $300. Supposed "whole house" heaters in the 11 kW to 13 kW range simply won't do the job in the winter anywhere north of Georgia. Manufacturers are now more realistic and candid, with clear info about the amount of temp rise from a given inlet water temp. That brings me to this 4kW model, which is carefully marketed as an under sink single faucet heater only. It works ideally for that application where I am in NC. They provided .35 GPM flow restricted faucet aerators. That flow rate should give you really hot water, but .35 GPM is a dribble. The manual specifies a 68F rise at .3 GPM but only 27F rise at .75 GPM (which would be a common cold-mixed flow rate for a 1.5 GPM bath or kitchen faucet). In any case, read the specs and be aware of both your incoming water temp and your faucet flow rate. This is my second Ecosmart and I think it's the best brand I've installed. The 11 kW model has performed well in the year I've had it. This model is compact, nicely arranged inside (see pic), has a solid housing with penetration seals, and includes temperature modulation with a digital temp display. With all the apparent quality, I expected a better warranty. They give you a year, but you've got to jump through hoops - install within 30 days of purchase, install using licensed electricians and plumbers (proof required), register the warranty within 30 days, and pay for shipping old and new units. I'll still rate it "good" on quality, but given the paltry warranty, Ecosmart doesn't seem as confident.
