After trying to get several quotes from plumbers that ranged from $3000 to $8000 to replace our interior 40-year old water heater due to the lack of a drain in the closet it was in, gas line that they wanted to re-run across the house, vents that were too small, lack of an electrical outlet in the closet, etc. we were pointed to this unit. Price was $1250 + $50 S&H and about $100 at HD for various parts (our closet configuration needed to be changed). Installation was mostly easy and the biggest issues were due to the house design rather than the heater (required a new outlet in the closet, moving of a few water pipes in the wall, shoring up the badly installed vent, and re-arrangement of the gas lines to not take up the entire closet). It took me about 3 evenings from removal to first use, but most of that time was the other stuff - had everything been in the right place I could have installed in 3-4 hours. The hardest part was trying to figure out how high I could mount the unit to allow for the bend in the exhaust to meet the existing vent, which took a little guesswork but came out ok. It is also a heavy unit to move by one person - really requires two people for a couple of hours to plan, arrange and fasten, but otherwise was a one-man/woman job. The unit is decently quiet - there is a hum when running, but since it is next to the bathroom that it serves, the water covers the hum most of the time, except for a few seconds after the water is off and the unit has yet to shut off. It is really no different than other 'normal' house sounds, and is certainly quieter than the HVAC that it is also next to. It provides sufficient hot water to that one bathroom (that is all that it serves) - I cannot comment on its ability to do anything more than that.
